When Nature Decides To Freeze

It’s winter in Austria. After two very warm winters in 2014/15 and 2015/16, this time it’s very frosty and snowy. Well, for me that’s a great opportunity to capture this magical time of the year in all of its glory. On several occasions in 2017, I have set off with my Fuji X-T2 and my two WR lenses (16-55 F2.8 and 50-140 F2.8). I was also keen on testing how my gear behaves at very cold temperatures and I have to say that it performed flawlessly. The lenses as well as the camera mastered every shooting without problems, even some lens changes in the forest were no problem. Only the battery drained a bit quicker than usual, but that’s normal in these circumstances and nothing to worry. But now to the pictures.
Kirchschlag near Linz
My first trip led me to Kirchschlag near Linz. It was a gloomy first of January with temperatures well below 0° C. While driving upwards to Kirchschlag (896 meters above sea level), the clouds disappeared and I had a gorgeous view on the Upper Austrian landscape.

The road back to Linz offered me a spectacular sight of a white winter valley.

Au at the Traun
After visiting Kirchschlag, I decided to drive to Au at the Traun, which is a beautiful forest near my hometown Wels. As previously mentioned, the temperatures were way below 0° C wherefore everything, including the trees, the leaves, etc., was frozen. I explored a narrow street which led directly through the forest.

In the afternoon I also shot some details of the forest. The lenses performed incredibly well the whole day and delivered sharp and detailed pictures. The 16-55 F2.8 and the 50-140 F2.8 are really one of the best zoom lenses out there and I enjoy using them very much (The only small niggle I found about the 50-140 F2.8 is the almost too tight fit of the lens hood)!

I hope you enjoyed watching these pictures as much as I have enjoyed taking them. I also went on some more photo trips since then so more winter pictures from Austria will be coming soon!
Cheers Tom
